Please confirm that you treat those with type 1 diabetes who also have Eating disorders, including those who deliberately manipulate/ omit insulin: Yes, one day per week at the Royal Sussex County Hospital

What type of service are you?:Psychotherapy in the Diabetes Centre (Cognitive Analytic Therapy)

Where is your service based?: Brighton  

Who do you care for (i.e. age limits)?:Adults, over 18.  Poorly controlled T1 and T2 patients, DKA patients who omit insulin.  Patient who have a range of psychological issues i.e. depression, anxiety and eating disorders.  ‘Severe’ problems go to Specialist Eating Disorder Service but they do not specialist in diabetes.

What is your catchment area?: Brighton and Hove How to get a referral: Only internal referrals are accepted as PCT does not as yet fund it.  I am working with the SHA to rectify this and the PCT are re organising their funding currently to commission specialist psychotherapy for people with long term conditions so this will change. 

Do you have any further details ?: I supervise many psychotherapists who work in diabetes centres seeing patients with eating disorders.  I have now worked in this area as a social worker for three years then as a researcher and psychotherapist for 20 years only in diabetes.  I lecture on the MSc Diabetes Care at Brighton University and modules include eating disorders and diabetes and have lectured for DUK on ‘diabulimia’.
